A Level 1 course, about 24 hours of instruction, gets you to a working foundation. Three months of regular practice gets you to a point where you can model a simple client commission. Six months in, the software stops feeling like an obstacle. At twelve months, designing in 3D is faster than drawing.
Those are the honest numbers from a training context, not a marketing brochure. What they do not tell you is where the real time goes, and that is worth being plain about.
What the timeline actually looks like
The first 24 hours (a Level 1 course). By the end of a structured Level 1 programme, a student can model a simple ring and a bezel-set pendant, and understands the difference between surfaces and solids. That is the foundation. It does not feel like much when you are in it, but it is the framework everything else attaches to.
Month one to three (two to three hours a week). Comfortable with the five or six commands that do most of the actual work. At this point you can take a client brief for a straightforward commission and produce a file that a casting house can work from. The modelling is slower than it will be, but it is correct.
Six months. Starting to feel fluent. When a novel problem arrives, you no longer need to start from scratch. You have enough history with the software to know which approach to try first.
Twelve months. Genuinely fast. Designing in 3D feels faster than drawing because you are working in the actual material, at the actual scale, with the actual geometry, rather than representing it on paper and translating later.
Where the time actually goes
The software is learnable quickly. Rhino’s core workflow, the handful of commands that build most jewellery, is not complicated. What takes time is not Rhino. It is jewellery-specific judgement: parting lines, wall thickness for casting, stone seat geometry at the depth a setter needs. None of that is a CAD problem. It is a making problem that shows up in CAD.
A student who has worked at a bench for years will progress through the software faster than someone coming to jewellery fresh, because they already know what the file needs to produce. They understand why a seat depth matters and what happens when it is wrong. The software is the medium; the knowledge is the constraint.
The mistake that adds months
The most common wrong turn is spending the first three months learning the full interface. Rhino ships with hundreds of commands. Most of them are not used in jewellery work. Students who try to master the whole interface before building anything real extend their learning curve significantly.
The students who progress fastest take the opposite approach: five commands, learned deeply, applied to real problems. New tools are added only when a specific job demands them. That discipline is uncomfortable at first, because it means saying no to features that look useful. It is also the difference between six months to fluency and eighteen.
The certification question
McNeel’s Rhino Level 1 certification is a separate online exam through its European certification platform, a timed multiple-choice test. It measures the software, not the jewellery judgement above, which is why a pass on paper and a castable file are different milestones.
