Casting weight and cost

Work out how much metal a piece will use, from a wax weight or from an estimated volume, and what it will cost including a casting house's alloy and casting margin.

1. Metal

2. Weight

3. Cost

Casting houses charge over pure-content value, to cover alloying, the casting fee, and minimum charges.

Melt / scrap value

Work out what a piece is worth for its metal content alone, after a refiner's deduction.

Typical refiner deductions run 10 to 20%. Hallmarked UK alloys are a reliable fineness; unhallmarked pieces need testing before you trust the figure.
